It was originally a traditional portrait that people used to market themselves as actors or for business. Then, digital cameras became commonplace, and now people use headshots for a plethora of different uses. Professional photographers take into consideration things such as the lighting, backgrounds, expression, and so on.

MAN TIPS: What to Wear to Your Portrait Session

Men need to take time and be selective about what to wear for your business portrait session. There are a lot of options to sort through, which is why we’re here to help. Here are a few tips for you to keep in mind when picking out the outfit you want to use for your portrait.

  1. If you opt for not wearing a jacket, wear a colored shirt. White shirts are great to wear under a jacket, but they typically don’t work so well on their own. Also, try choosing a color that is darker than your skin tone. 
  2. For most mens business portraits, a button-up shirt, a suit jacket, and a tie serve the purpose well. Honestly, it’s the go-to outfit, and sometimes, if it’s not broken, you don’t need to fix it. If you want to add a little something different to this combo, opt for a handkerchief for your jacket pocket or a colored shirt instead of a white one. 
  3. Layering your shirt with a long-sleeved pull-over sweater may be an alternative to wearing a suit jacket depending on your business and the look you want in your photo. 
  4. If wearing a dress shirt with no jacket, do not wear short sleeves. Long sleeves wear better and look better in the photos. 
  5. Bear in mind how your suit looks when you sit if you plan on sitting in your picture. If it looks great standing, but bunches up when you sit, you may want to either re-think your pose, or your suit. You also don’t want to wear something that wrinkles easy, or else it may not look its best by the time you get done with a few different shots or poses. 
  6. Don’t wear a suit that has tight patterns in/on the fabric. These may not come across very well in your picture. Tight patterns can introduce a visual distraction called moire. Pinstripes are okay so long as there is a little room in between the lines.

A few weeks ago we received the call from one of our favorite clients, Cresa.

Our assignment was to create both an environmental portrait and a standard headshot for their incoming CEO, Jim Underhill.

Cresa is a the world’s biggest tenant-only commercial real-estate brokerage. The company has offices in over 70 cities worldwide, and is known for client advocacy, thought leadership and analytics, and a special culture from being a 100% employee owned company.

Cresa has been a client for the last 4-5 years and it’s always a pleasure to work with Regina and the rest of the team. Jim fit the prototypical mold of almost everyone we’ve photographed in their Washington DC and Bethesda offices; he’s super nice and makes you feel like a million bucks when you’re doing your job. It’s really easy to see Cresa selected him as CEO.

We had about 30 minutes on Jim’s calendar, but honestly…we know he would have give us any amount of time that we needed.  We scouted out several different locations inside the building at their 1800 M St NW offices including the roof top and an unfinished portion of the 3rd floor. Ultimately we settled on shooting in the lobby and in a low-traffic retail portion of the ground floor.

Ultimately, we were able to create a series of portraits in 3 different locations. We setup and online proofing gallery for the client from which they selected (4) total files. After retouching the files we delivered them in time for their corporate announcement to the rest of the business world. I’ve seen the press release and accompanying photograph in publications ranging from the NY Times to the numerous editions of the Business Journals, Bisnow, and all over social media in the commercial real estate world.

It’s a common question: Should I wear glasses for my portrait? And it’s one that nobody can definitively answer for you. Whether or not to wear glasses for a portrait is, in the end, a personal decision. Here are some guidelines to consider, though, if you’re getting ready to update your business portrait or head shot and are asking yourself this question:

If you answered yes, then you probably DO want to wear glasses, particularly if you are using your portrait for professional reasons. You want your portrait to accurately represent you, which means leaving your glasses on as an identifying feature. If you don’t wear them all the time, such as if you go back and forth between contacts and glasses, then it comes down to your personal preference of how you want to be identified.

What do I need to do to prepare?

Wearing glasses for your portrait comes with a few extra steps.

First, make sure your glasses are clean. Use a glasses cleaner right before your portrait session to ensure they are spotless.

Bring a few pairs of glasses, if you have them, so your photographer can capture different aspects of your personality and give you some options to choose from.

What to avoid:

If you can, avoid wearing glasses with transitions lenses since these can darken up depending on the lighting of your photo shoot. Also avoid wearing glasses that are bent or otherwise broken. Take the time to get new glasses or to get yours fixed if this is the case.

Last week we created updated/new business portraits for one of our McLean VA Law Firm clients. Allison, the Firm Administrator, gave us a call a few weeks prior to the shoot to go over their needs. She informed us that we would be working with 4 of their new attorneys and staff.

We arrived 45 minutes early to setup our cameras, computers and professional lighting equipment.  We’ve constructed a travel kit that can easily be handled by one person. For this assignment we had both a photographer and an assistant since we were reviewing and selecting with each person.

Working with the this firm is always a highlight of our week. They are organized and professional. Each person as a scheduled time (usually 15 minutes) and everyone is always easy to work with.

We can offer your professionals suggestions on what to wear for their headshot sessions. We always assist with posing (we call it “coaching”). We can also help determine what style of image is most appropriate for your line of business. Our professional photographers use the highest quality Nikon camera equipment and Swiss made professional lighting.

On a daily basis, we work with clients in McLean and Tysons Corner to create a custom program that meets their specific needs. That could mean innovative lighting techniques, consistent backgrounds, and various methods of image delivery. We also provide all of our clients with an an unlimited release.  This release allows your company to use the final images in any internal or external public relations and collateral marketing materials for an unlimited about of time.

This is a common question asked by clients. The answer is almost always “yes.”  However, it comes down to your brand, target audience, and message.

In a world dominated by online and social media, a great business portrait has become more important than ever. You are creating your personal brand. What is the message you are trying to convey? Who is your target audience? Where will you use the business portrait?

If your audience is expecting a serious message, you want your business portrait to convey shrewdness, wisdom, and savvy. However, you probably do not want to express anger and rigidness. There are many professional headshots of Mr. Holder, from his long career, showing him with a serious and straight-faced, but also and sometimes stern. Our photos portray the former Attorney General as serious, but with wisdom, understanding, and warmth.


If you need a photo for LinkedIn and are trying to attract new employees or a new employer, you may want a big beautiful smile, even if your business is very serious. If one is working in an inherently stressful field, they are seeking to avoid the unhappy work environment.

The main feature of “approachability” is in the movement in the mouth. The corners of the lips are drawn back and slightly up. The lips can remain together in a smile. A smiling image has been proven time and time again to make people feel more at ease.  It’s also a widely held belief that a person who smiles is more trustworthy.

Small smiles are typically “more professional” but the mouth can also be opened, with the teeth together, in a grin.

Ultimately, our recommendation is to try a variety of facial expressions (with and without smiles) during your photo session. If one is not working for you, the other is available. Having multiple photos with and without a smile, with different backgrounds, and different outfits give you the flexibility to change the mood with an upload.
