The Business Portrait. What is it?

What is a Business Portrait? How is it Different from a Headshot?

Based on the strict definition, a headshot photograph captures a person’s head and shoulders with an emphasis on the face. A business portrait captures more of the individuals body than a headshot.

It was originally a traditional portrait that people used to market themselves as actors or for business. Then, digital cameras became commonplace, and now people use headshots for a plethora of different uses. Professional photographers take into consideration things such as the lighting, backgrounds, expression, and so on.

With the advent of LinkedIn®, people began throwing their vacation photos on to various social media outlets without thinking about who might see them. The headshot started to lose its place in business marketing, and is frequently is just an amateur marketing tool.

Fortunately, business professionals now have the business portrait. A direct reaction to snapshots, the business portrait aims for a more philosophical approach. The entire photograph, from the light, composition, clothing, makeup, jewelry, background, expression, etc.; exists to tell the subject’s story. Your story. Nothing happens without considering how it will affect the subject’s public image and audience. How we can brand you in your business environment.

While the business portrait is now the standard we use to market you, your brand, and your business, you do not just walk into a studio off the street. Each session requires a evaluation of your situation and marketing needs.

If you are ready to take your career to the next level, contact us so we can begin the process today.

Professional Business Portraits for Lawyers

Professional Business Portraits for Law Firms and Attorneys.

If you are just starting your law firm, or if you have had staffing changes and need to update existing business portraits, choosing a professional photographer with experience in creating business portraits for lawyers is one of the smartest moves you can make.

But before your appointment, there are some things you can do ahead of time that will help you get the portraits you want.

1. Image. Spend some time with other partners, or associates and staff as appropriate, deciding on what kind of image you want to portray for your firm through business photography. Do you want to look casual? Formal? Professional, yet approachable? Do you want to pose in the studio or in your office?

Decide these things ahead of time, as these choices will impact what people will wear and how they will pose for your firm’s portraits. Then, make sure everyone knows what the plan is, including all partners, associates, and staff. Also make sure you communicate with your photographer about what you want to get out of your portrait session.

2. Consistency. Be consistent with your business portraits and headshots. Once you’ve made those image decisions, stick with them for these and future sittings. This will give your website and other marketing a consistent look and feel.

3. Relationship. Establish a relationship with the firm photographer that can not only take this series of portraits for you, but that can create headshots for new employees or new portraits periodically, all with the look and feel you are trying to portray for your firm. This will help you continue to portray a consistent, polished image.

Corporate Headshots Heads to UMB School of Social Work

Last week we had the opportunity to attend the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) School of Social Work’s Job Fair and shoot headshots for the students. Needless to say it was a busy day and we ended up shooting 98 students in just under 2 and half hours! The line was down the hall within minutes of us setting up and many students thanked us for providing such a great service.

Business headshots are essential in this day and age. Some companies and organizations request headshots before hiring, and having a LinkedIn account without a headshot is an easy way for your profile to be overlooked. By providing these students with quality headshots even before they graduate we’re giving them a BIG step over the competition.

PAL_2075We’ve cultivated a fantastic relationship creating portraits for UMB over the past few years. This was our first time working with the School of Social Work, but we have also created great headshots for UMB Pharmacy and the School of Law multiple times in the past. We look forward to shooting more great headshots with them in the future!

New Website? You Need Headshots!

We’re 11 hours into our business day sitting at Chicago’s O’Hara Airport when I find out  that my flight back to Washington DC was delayed…so what better to do than edit the images from our shoot earlier today.

Our client  today was a Chicago based real estate development firm. A few weeks ago we worked with their Washington DC office and this week we flew to Chicago to photograph 25 of their midwest based executives. I’ll admit that the highlight was talking business the Chairman and CEO…a man with 30+ years experience and that has developed over $2 BILLION of urban mixed-use projects. Whenever I have the opportunity I try to get a few minutes of his/her ear to discuss business. I definitely walked away with 2-3 tidbits of information that will help me grow as a leader and business owner.

The image on the right has a ghost (i.e. my First Assistant) in the background of what I think is a fantastic image. Fortunately we had 10-12 other great frames that the client loved as well.

Did you know that it only takes 15 minutes to update your corporate headshot with a new outstanding business portrait?
