In my experience, there are three reasons why people choose the wrong profile photo for their social media profiles. Since we specialize in corporate headshots and business portraits, we’re keenly aware of what goes into making a great profile picture.
One thing we’ve noticed is that if we provide a client multiple images and leave the selection process up to them, they will frequently select the wrong picture. Here are three scientifically proven reasons that this happens:
This morning I was at a photo shoot and we went through a session of 10 to 12 great shots. When we finished, the client said she couldn’t wait to take them again. I was confused as to why. She said she had a cold, stubbed her toe, and wasn’t feeling good. In my head, I laughed. Who would know that she stubbed her toe or had a cold from her pictures? Her eyes weren’t red and she didn’t have a runny nose either. She had already made her decision about the pictures before even taking them. I thought the pictures looked great.
Think about it. When you look at a mirror, you’re seeing a reflected image of yourself. That’s not the way the camera (or other people) see you. It’s scientifically proven that looking at a picture isn’t the same as looking in the mirror, and it can be very jarring to look at an image that’s flipped over. Sometimes we flip the images for our clients so that it looks more familiar to the mirrored image they have in their heads.
We all have insecurities about our bodies, our faces, and ourselves in general. That can be something difficult to get over, especially when it’s time to get a new picture and you don’t like what you see in the lens. These internal feelings are something you need to mentally get past, because it’s nothing you can change in the moment. It doesn’t stop your feelings, but it doesn’t stop you from having an absolutely fantastic headshot either.
If you have any questions about any of these tips or you just have questions about your next headshot (or your last one), don’t hesitate to reach out and give me a call or send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Shorten your learning curve, make the most of your resources, an maximize your impact both online and off.
